Local Area Networks
A local area network (LAN) is a network over a relatively small geographical area, normally one building or group of buildings. Having a LAN allows the enabled devices (PC, Telephone, Fax etc) to communicate with each other. It allows shared storing and communal activities to take place. For instance networking a printer. For a LAN to work a network switch is needed to route the communication traffic from the devices on the network to their destination. For internet access a router is connected to the network switch allowing any device on the network to connect to the internet.
